    1802: Mary Frances Clarke, Irish born founder of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in PA, co-founder of a boarding school for girls that eventually became Clarke College, born.

    1831: Metta Victoria Fuller Victor, credited w/ authoring 1 of 1st detective novels in US, wrote over 100 “dime novels,” born.

    1860: Susanna Salter, 1st woman elected mayor in US & 1st woman to hold political office in the US, born. http://bit.ly/Aer2cF

    1868: Eleanor Laura McMain, settlement house worker, “the Jane Addams of New Orleans,” labor & public health activist, born.

    1873: Inez Haynes Irwin, American feminist author, journalist, member of National Women’s Party, president of the Authors Guild, born.

    1903: Martha Washington Hotel opens in New York City, USA as the first hotel exclusively for women.

    1977: Bette Davis, US actress, becomes 1st woman to be honored with the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

    1994: The Latin Music Hall of Fame is created in Miami, Florida. Gloria Estefan receives the 1st star.
