    1693: Anna Ivanovna, Empress of Russia from 1730 to 1740, born.

    1862: Hannah Bachman Einstein, advocate for widowed mother’s pensions, wrote NY Child Welfare Law of 1915, 1st in US, born.

    1873: Colette, French novelist most famous for her novel Gigi, performed in dance hall, had affairs w/ women, born.

    1935: Iceland becomes the first country to officially legalize abortion.

    1938: Crystal Bird Fauset elected to the PA state legislature, becoming the 1st African American female state legislator.

    1969: Barbara Jo Rubin becomes the 1st woman jockey (horse racing) to win in North America.

    1986: 1st women killed in US space program (Judith Resnick, Christa McAuliffe) as Challenger explodes, killing all 7 aboard.
