    1858: Beatrice Potter Webb, co-founder of the London School of Economics, architect of the British modern welfare system, born

    1872: Marie Manning, novelist & reporter, wrote the 1st US newspaper advice column, Dear Beatrice Fairfax, in 1898, born.

    1901: Queen Victoria died at age 81 after 63 years on the British throne. She was longest ruling monarch of Great Britain

    1906: Willa Brown Chappell, 1st Black woman to get a US commercial pilot’s license, founder 1st Black owned flight school, born

    1973: The US Supreme Court handed down its Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized abortion w/ restrictions.

    1984: Annette Kennedy scores 70 points in a basketball game, breaking the US women’s single-game college scoring record.

    1997: The US Senate confirmed Madeleine Albright as the nation’s first female secretary of state
